August's Top 15 Things to do in Reno

There’s never a dull moment in the Biggest Little City, and August is no exception! Take a gander at what this month has to offer, both in the heart of the city and our surrounding neighborhoods.

Hot August Nights — From August 2‒7, Reno is home to the largest classic car event in the country. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Hot August Nights will showcase more than 6,000 beautifully restored vehicles from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It’s family-friendly fun with free admission for most events!

Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival — More than 100 musicians will take over Nevada’s capital August 5‒21, performing mostly free shows for fans of all ages. If your musical tastes include jazz, blues, bluegrass, Latin, and more, you won’t want to miss this annual festival!

Reno Aces Home Games — There’s no better souvenir to take home than a homerun or foul ball. Catch an August home game at Greater Nevada Field and see Reno’s pro baseball team crush the competition:

The Wizard of Oz — Sierra School of Performing Arts presents this beloved musical based on the Oscar-winning 1939 movie from August 12‒21, with shows starting at 7:30pm. Support some of Northern Nevada’s best community actors with tickets starting at just $15.

Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival — Voted the Best Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Event in the Country by Outdoor Magazine, this annual festival offers something for the whole family – whether you’re an experienced or novice paddle boarder! Held at Kings Beach State Park from August 12‒14, outdoor enthusiasts can register for 10-, 5-, or 2-mile races, or kick back enjoy the Big Brothers / Big Sisters Luau with your donation supporting a local cause.

Animal Ark at Dark — For over 30 years, Animal Ark has been a sanctuary for exotic and endangered species, including jaguars, cheetahs, black bears, and more. RSVP now for their flashlight-led night safari on August 13, as this special event is only offered by the non-profit organization once a year! Tickets are $15 for adults, $13.50 for seniors, and $12 for children.

Reno Pirate Crawl —Don your finest pirate’s garb and set sail for downtown Reno on August 13! More than 20 bars will offer drink specials starting at 7:30pm, with costume contests, giveaways, and peg-leg parties along the way. If you miss this, you’ll be made to walk the plank!

Sounds of Summer August Concert — What’s better than shopping at The Summit? Shopping and enjoying free live music at the same time! Rock out with JamPro Music Factory Band from 7-8:30pm on August 18, and come hungry – delicious food trucks will be there, too.

Full Moon Kayak Tour on Lake Tahoe — Experience the full beauty of Lake Tahoe (and get in a workout) by joining Tahoe Adventure Company for guided kayak trip on August 19. Perfect for beginner to experienced kayakers, you won’t find a better place to stargaze in the region.

Reno Greek Festival — Go Greek for the week(end) of August 19‒21! Get your fill of authentic spanakopita, baklava, gyros, and more while it lasts, and don’t miss the traditional Greek dancing that will take place. Specialty imports and goods will be available in the town market as well.

Holi Festival of Color — Reno will host “the World’s Happiest Transformational Event” on August 20, complete with music, food, and tons of colored powder ready for throwing in celebration. Be sure to wear white clothing so you can transform into a rainbow!

Pacifica Festival —Reno loves a good festival, and this inaugural event celebrates Polynesian and Asian-Pacific culture from August 20‒21. Free for the whole family, you’ll be able to enjoy traditional dishes like musubi, lumpia, udon, and more. Once you’re full, find a spot near the main stage to vibe with some island reggae, or shop the arts, crafts, and merchandise available until you drop. 

Downtown Reno Wine Walk —Soak in the summer sun while sampling glasses of wine from more than 20 vendors. This iconic Reno event is hosted every third Saturday of the month, so wear your most comfortable walking shoes on August 20.

CANFEST — If you love craft beer, CANFEST is a can’t-miss event on August 26! Featuring more than 100 beers exclusively poured from cans, you’ll have five hours to sample to your heart’s content. Plus, a portion of the proceeds goes to a local charity!

Fallon Fights — Since the days of Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries, Nevada has been home to professional boxing. Take the scenic drive to nearby Fallon on August 27 to watch boxing matches and mixed martial arts fights under the stars.
